Gorta- Swatragh's Famine Story
23rd Jun 2026
Our Primary 7 pupils brought their topic on ‘The Famine’ to life with a trip to Gorta Swatragh’s Famine Story at Friels Hospitality & Heritage Venue.
The children stepped back in time through immersive storytelling, interactive displays and engaging audio-visual technology. It was a fantastic way to deepen their understanding of the novel Under the Hawthorn Tree and the realities of life during the Irish Famine within our local communities.
We learned lots about daily struggles during the famine, the story of Dr Mooney and his soup kitchen and took part in a VR experience. To finish the trip, we enjoyed a well deserved ice cream!
A huge thank you to Cathy, Dermot and all the team for their warm welcome and for providing this experience for our pupils.
